Jakarta Police Suggest Regulating Work Hours to Prevent Traffic Jams

TEMPO.CO , Jakarta - Jakarta Metro Police traffic director, Sr. Comsr. Latif Usman, suggested work hours be regulated in an effort to reduce the traffic jams during the rush hours in the morning and afternoon. Usman believes the work hours must be separated to better cope the congestion currently caused by school hours, work hours, and general activities by people all happening at the same time.

"Community doings start at 07:00, 08:00, and 09:00. So they will slash together from home at the same time so that when they are here they will meet at the same time," he said in his statement, Friday, 22 July.

In fact, Latif stationary, from his observations in the field, the roads in Jakarta area and its surroundings are even empty at 09:00-15:00. Therefore, he argued, the free hours should be used as alternative hours for country to depart for work.

Through better-distributed work hours, he said, traffic congestion can be suppressed. It will also prick the economic losses caused by commuters being stuck in long stability of vehicles.

"At this time, traffic jams at 9 a.m. already at 54 percent, so is it comfortable? With road congestion, there is an annual spot loss of around Rp71 trillion. This is not just Jakarta, this is all over Indonesia," said Latif.

Jakarta Deputy Governor Riza Patria said he had discussed the Jakarta Police’s suggestion on the distribution of work hours in the capital city.
