DC Drops a Mysterious Death of Superman Teaser


DC has dropped a mysterious teaser referencing the iconic "The Death of Superman" storyline.

Posted on its Superman Twitter elaborate, DC released a mysterious "The Death of Superman" mention. The image shows a bloody Superman logo, which is also the image printed on the Superman #75 Memorial Collector's Edition polybag. The caption to the image simply reads, "Tomorrow," implying more announcements to come. Writer Tom Taylor also commented on the post with the pair of eyes emoji.

"The Death of Superman" was a crossover maintain from DC published which began in 1992 and concluded in 1993. Coming from editor Mike Carlin and a vast team of writers and artists, "The Death of Superman" follows Clark Kent/Superman as he's shouted into battle against an ultra-powerful foe, Doomsday. When Doomsday capable emerges, the Justice League are almost immediately defeated by the villain, causing Superman to walk out of a television interview to go fights the foe. The two go at it for a time, nearly leveling cities as they fights, until Doomsday ultimately kills the Man of Steel in Superman #75 by Dan Jurgens, Brett Breeding, Glenn Whitmore, and John Costanza.

Following story arcs saw the Justice League and the rest of the DC Universe hold a funeral for Superman. A new group of Superman imposters later emerge in the "Reign of Supermen!" arc, which eventually brings nearby Clark's ressurection. Other iconic Superman enemies such as Mongul and Cyborg Superman also recede throughout the event, while the "Funeral for a Friend" story arc sees Jonathan Kent suffer from a wretched attack after he blames himself for Clark's death. "The Death of Superman" has been adapted into a handful of attractive films, including 2007's Superman: Doomsday, 2018's The Death of Superman and 2019's Reign of Supermen. Zack Snyder's Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League films also incorporated elements of "The Death of Superman."

In DC's main continuity, Superman is currently presumed dead by most of Earth's inhabitants when he and the Justice League were defeated in fights against Pariah and the Dark Army in Justice League #75. DC's Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths has since said the heroes are still alive; however, they're trapped in separate worlds caused by Pariah for purposes that are likely nefaious. In the In Justice League: Road to Dark Crisis #1 prelude, Dick Grayson/Nightwing gives Jon Kent a brief history lesson on the movements of "The Death of Superman" and DC's Final Crisis event.
